Obesity Prevention Through Gardening Internship

This internship will offer work experience and skill building through an Obesity Prevention Grant held by Community Health Centers of South Central Texas’ WIC project #43 in Gonzales, Texas. This internship will be based on our current Obesity Prevention grant which includes teaching gardening skills to WIC families to increase their intake of vegetables as a means to aid with obesity prevention in the community. This internship will enable the intern to develop an understanding of gardening to sustain families and aid with healthy food availability, have an opportunity to review & research grant effectiveness, assess future project and grant needs, compile records, learn about water needs and to incorporate updates into existing social media for the Community Health Center.
Main Objectives & Outcomes:
Assisting in garden maintenance to include preparing soil, weeding, watering, harvesting and other basic garden maintenance throughout the weeks to learn basic gardening skills.
Learn about the components of WIC nutrition education to include assistance in teaching of gardening classes on Friday mornings to WIC families.
Review the basic program components for our Obesity Prevention Grant.
Compile monthly attendance records for gardening classes.
Promotion of the WIC Garden to increase class attendance within WIC families and the WIC eligible public (some funds available through the WIC program to aid in this need).
Work on future grant needs, estimates for upcoming projects/resources needed.
Learn about low water irrigation and rainwater collection systems.
Work with CHCSCT IT department to manage updates for WIC garden on our existing Facebook page.
Assist with compiling and assessing outcome objectives for current grant for current fiscal year
Complete follow-up questionnaires with WIC clients who attend gardening class.
As a participant of Ogallala Commons Community Internship Program, the intern must also meet the following requirements (non-stipend time):
With supervisor, craft a Work Plan
Attend an Orientation in Channing Texas (June 3-5, 2014)
Create and publish 5 Internet blog postings with 10 photos during internship period
Conduct an “Explore Your Community” exercise
Do 10 hours of Community Service during internship period
Prepare Internship Portfolio (via PowerPoint) and present it during Harvesting Ceremony
Prepare an Evaluation of the internship, as well as receive an evaluation from supervisor
This internship will be supervised by Cynthia Green with Paul Martin & Emma Garza available as advisors. Maximum stipend for this internship will not exceed $2400.00
